Álvaro Fidalgo has officially become eligible to be called up by the Mexico men’s national team after fulfilling FIFA’s residency requirements, meaning coach Javier Aguirre can include him in the squad starting with the March FIFA international window ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Fidalgo, a Spanish-born midfielder who recently signed with Real Betis after several seasons in Mexico’s Liga MX, had already confirmed his willingness to represent El Tri. With the five-year residency rule now satisfied, the door is open for his first official international call-up, potentially for matches against Portugal and Belgium in March.
The player’s eligibility comes at a time when Mexico is managing several injuries in its midfield, making Fidalgo a notable option for Aguirre as he finalizes preparations for the World Cup later this year. Federation officials have indicated that Fidalgo is among the roughly 55 players being monitored for possible selection, though the final decision will rest with the national team coach.
Fidalgo has never played an official senior match for Spain, meaning there is no regulatory barrier to his switch. His technical skills, experience in Liga MX, and growing experience in European club football have made him a topic of discussion among fans and analysts as Mexico builds toward its home-hosted World Cup campaign.
