Toluca Wins Historic Leagues Cup Final, Defeating Monterrey 2-0

Toluca claimed its first-ever Leagues Cup title on Sunday night, defeating Monterrey 2-0 at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Texas, in the first final between two Liga MX clubs in the modern era of the competition.

The Diablos Rojos wasted little time making their mark. Alexis Vega opened the scoring in the fourth minute, reacting quickest inside the box after Federico Viñas' effort hit the post. Vega's finish gave Toluca an early advantage and put Monterrey under pressure from the start.

Monterrey responded by creating several opportunities, particularly through Lucas Ocampos, Diego Rossi and Hugo Cuypers. However, Toluca goalkeeper Hugo González made several important saves to keep the Rayados off the scoreboard. Monterrey ultimately finished the match without finding a way past the Toluca defense.

Toluca remained dangerous on the counterattack, and that approach paid off again in the second half. In the 70th minute, Helinho doubled the lead, finishing from a rebound after Esteban Andrada had initially denied Jorge Díaz Price. The goal gave the Diablos a 2-0 advantage with 20 minutes remaining.

Monterrey continued pushing forward but could not break through. Toluca's defense remained organized until the final whistle, securing a 2-0 victory and the club's first Leagues Cup championship.

The title adds another trophy to Antonio Mohamed's remarkable run with Toluca. According to Leagues Cup, the championship is his sixth trophy with the club, following the Clausura 2025, Campeón de Campeones 2025, Campeones Cup 2025, Apertura 2025 and 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup titles.

The victory also makes Toluca the first Mexican club to win the modern edition of the Leagues Cup and ends three consecutive MLS titles in the competition.
