Gilberto Mora unexpectedly became the subject of a nationwide debate after Mexico’s Ministry of Defense (Sedena) reiterated the requirements for mandatory national military service (SMN). The announcement sparked confusion among fans and commentators regarding whether the rising talent could be forced to fulfill the requirement — potentially jeopardizing his participation in the 2026 World Cup.
The reality is straightforward: there is no legal conflict. Mora will still be underage during the World Cup. When the tournament begins on June 11 and concludes on July 19, 2026, he will still be 17 years old. He does not turn 18 until October 14, meaning there is no obligation to enroll or begin the SMN process at any point during the tournament timeframe.
According to guidelines from the Mexican government, young men must begin SMN registration in the calendar year they turn 18, enter the lottery that same year, and then complete the service the following year. In Mora’s case, that process begins in 2027 — after the World Cup.
This means Javier Aguirre and the Mexican national team staff can breathe easy. Mexico will have its teenage phenom available without legal interruption, without administrative obstacles, and without any risk of a forced absence during the tournament. Gilberto Mora will finish 2026 on the global stage — and only afterward begin his SMN process the following year.
