Uriel Antuna Faces His Last Chance to Succeed in Liga MX With Pumas

Uriel Antuna arrives at Pumas with virtually no margin for error. The winger from Durango is facing the most critical moment of his career after years of inconsistent performances in Liga MX. His talent has never been in question—his consistency has.

His stint with Tigres only reinforced those doubts. Antuna failed to establish himself or make a meaningful impact in the team’s attack. Across 48 matches in Liga MX and international competitions, he managed just three assists and quickly lost relevance. The Monterrey-based club chose to move on after a campaign with little influence, leaving Antuna with diminished sporting value and in need of a fresh start.

At Pumas, there will be no time for a prolonged adjustment period. The team needs immediate results, and Antuna will be expected to deliver from his very first minutes on the pitch.

Antuna returned to Mexico with Chivas in 2020 and experienced a mixed spell. He showcased speed and one-on-one ability but repeatedly struggled in the final third. Criticism focused on his decision-making and lack of end product.

His best version emerged with Cruz Azul in 2022. At La Máquina, Antuna embraced a defined attacking role, improved his numbers, and found consistency. That form earned him a regular place in Mexico national team call-ups.

However, that level did not last. Inconsistency resurfaced, and his career once again slipped into uncertainty. Now, Antuna joins Pumas with the clear responsibility of sustaining his performances.

Head coach Efraín Juárez personally requested his signing, but a guaranteed starting spot is not part of the deal. Antuna must produce goals, assists, and consistent performances. At Ciudad Universitaria, he is playing for his future at the top level—and possibly his final opportunity to stay in contention for the 2026 World Cup.
