Deportivo Toluca Fútbol Club took an important step toward the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup 2026 after defeating LA Galaxy 4–2 in the first leg of the quarterfinals at the Estadio Nemesio Díez.
Despite the convincing scoreline, the match told a different story, as Toluca was clearly superior throughout the game and could have won by a larger margin. The home side imposed its rhythm from the opening minutes and controlled most of the action.
The scoring opened early when Nicolás Castro put Toluca ahead in the 12th minute, setting the tone for a dominant first half. Later, Paulinho extended the lead before halftime, and the Portuguese striker would go on to have a standout performance, finishing with a hat-trick.
LA Galaxy managed to stay alive in the tie thanks to two goals, including contributions from players like Gabriel Pec and Marco Reus, taking advantage of defensive lapses from Toluca.
With the 4–2 result, Toluca takes a valuable advantage into the second leg in Los Angeles, although the series remains open due to the away goals scored by the MLS side. The decisive match will determine who advances to the semifinals of the tournament.
Even with the win, the takeaway is clear: Toluca showed dominance and attacking power, but will need to be more efficient and defensively solid to close out the series on the road.
