It's official. Thomas Partey will not play in Ghana's first World Cup match.
FIFA confirmed that Partey will be unable to travel from Ghana's team base camp in Boston to Canada for their first World Cup match against Panama on Wednesday, June 17, as his visa application has been refused by the Canadian government. FIFA added plainly: "FIFA is not involved in the immigration processes of host countries, including the adjudication of visas."

Partey, 32, was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in July 2025, then two additional counts of rape in February 2026. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. His trial, scheduled for Southwark Crown Court in London, may now be delayed until early 2027.
Under the conditions of his bail, Partey must notify authorities of any plans to travel abroad. US federal law also requires him to declare his legal status upon entry.
Ghana's Sports Minister Kofi Adams had earlier told Joy News he was unaware of any denial — though he acknowledged Partey previously had challenges securing a US visa, which was ultimately resolved.
Ghana face Panama at BMO Field in Toronto on June 17, then England on June 23, and Croatia on June 27. Partey will remain at the team's Rhode Island training base while his teammates make the trip north.
