This is how Estadio Banorte looks with its new colors ahead of the 2026 World Cup

Updated: Jan 19

The iconic Estadio Azteca, currently undergoing a full renovation for the FIFA World Cup 2026, is beginning to reveal its dramatic transformation. One of the most striking changes is the stadium roof, now painted red with white accents, according to videos circulating on social media.

The new red-and-white color scheme aligns with the stadium’s main sponsor, Banco Banorte, whose name the venue will officially carry during the World Cup as Estadio Banorte. Images shared online show the dominant red tones on the roof, along with sections of the interior stands featuring similar colors, sparking excitement among fans eagerly awaiting the reopening of the legendary venue known as the Coloso de Santa Úrsula.

The transformation of Estadio Banorte goes far beyond aesthetics. The renovation project includes major structural upgrades such as a fully renewed pitch, new seating areas, expanded accessibility zones for people with disabilities, and significantly improved internet connectivity throughout the stadium. Plans also call for the installation of modern elevators and more than 7,120 square meters of new hospitality areas designed to enhance the fan experience.

Renovation work began in May 2024 and is progressing at full speed with the goal of having the stadium ready by March 28, 2026. On that date, Mexico national football team is scheduled to face Portugal national football team in a friendly match that will mark the official reopening of the venue.

The upgrades include the installation of seats in red, white, and gray tones, the removal of Club América’s crest—which had remained visible until the stadium closed for renovations—and a complete overhaul of premium and VIP areas. Portions of the new LED lighting system surrounding the roof have already been installed, giving Estadio Banorte a modern and visually striking appearance, especially for night matches.

Despite visible progress, some leaked videos show that certain sections—particularly in the upper luxury boxes—are still under construction, suggesting that finishing touches may continue even after the official reopening.

The renovation of Estadio Banorte is crucial not only for the reopening match but also for its role as one of Mexico’s main venues during the 2026 World Cup. The stadium is set to host multiple matches in the tournament, reaffirming its status as one of the most historic and important football venues in the world.
