The blue sharks bite back.
Luis de la Fuente’s Spain walked into Mercedes-Benz Stadium as European champions. They walked out with nothing.

Cabo Verde, World Cup debutants representing a nation of just over 500,000 people held La Roja to a 0–0 draw in one of the most surprising results in the World Cup so far.
Spain had 27 shots over 90 minutes and couldn’t break through a Cabo Verde side that was superbly organized from back to front. La Roja’s xG sat at 2.29. Cabo Verde’s? 0.3. The numbers tell the story of a team that came to defend and executed it to perfection.
The hero was unmistakable. Vozinha, 40 years old, made save after save to preserve a historic point for his country. He turned away Oyarzabal, Laporte, and Torres in the first half, the latter also striking the bar from Spain’s best chance of the match.

Cabo Verde earned their World Cup spot by finishing African qualifying with 23 points, four ahead of Cameroon. Monday’s result is the payoff for a program that has quietly been building toward a moment exactly like this one.
Spain still has Uruguay and Saudi Arabia ahead in Group H. A slip-up in the opener doesn’t end their campaign but it changes the conversation entirely. A result that will reverberate around planet football.
