San Diego FC defeated Deportivo Toluca FC 3–2 in the first leg of the Round of 16 of the Concacaf Champions Cup, in a match played at Snapdragon Stadium in California. The result leaves the series open ahead of the return leg in Mexico.
Toluca took an early lead through Jesús Gallardo, who converted a penalty to give the Mexican side the advantage in the first half.
However, the MLS club reacted quickly and turned the match around with goals from David Vázquez and Anders Dreyer, capitalizing on their attacking momentum after the break.
Despite playing part of the match with ten players following an early red card, San Diego maintained offensive pressure and extended their lead. Toluca managed to reduce the deficit late in the match when Helinho scored from the penalty spot in stoppage time, keeping the Mexican team within reach heading into the second leg.
With the 3–2 result, the series remains open and will be decided in the return match at Estadio Nemesio Díez in Toluca, where the Liga MX side will look to overturn the deficit and secure a place in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
