Manchester United have officially announced the departure of head coach Ruben Amorim, bringing an end to a turbulent spell defined by inconsistency and the absence of silverware. Despite sitting sixth in the Premier League table, the Red Devils hierarchy chose not to extend their patience with the Portuguese manager.
The decision was confirmed through a brief club statement thanking Amorim for his work since taking charge in November 2024. His final match in charge was a 1–1 draw against Leeds United, where a late goal from Matheus Cunha prevented defeat but failed to save his position.
During his time at Old Trafford, Amorim’s most notable achievement was guiding United to the 2025 UEFA Europa League Final, where they narrowly lost to Tottenham at San Mamés in Bilbao. Beyond that run, however, the project never truly convinced supporters nor translated into sustained league success.
In response to his exit, the club announced that former midfielder Darren Fletcher will serve as interim manager for the upcoming Premier League fixture against Burnley at Turf Moor. Fletcher, a modern icon of the club, has limited senior coaching experience, having mainly worked with Manchester United’s youth setup.
Amorim arrived with high expectations after a highly successful spell at Sporting CP, especially following the underwhelming era of Erik ten Hag. Yet the promising start gradually faded as results deteriorated and performances failed to match the proposed footballing identity.
Statistically, Amorim oversaw 63 official matches, recording 25 wins, 15 draws and 23 defeats. United reached only one final in that span and struggled to compete consistently in the Premier League. The lowest point came during the 2024–25 season, when United finished 15th in the league, uncomfortably close to the relegation zone. That campaign also included a humiliating EFL Cup elimination on penalties to fourth-tier side Grimsby Town, a moment that came to symbolize one of the most disappointing managerial stints in the club’s recent history.
