Rodrygo Goes is facing the worst-case scenario. Real Madrid has officially confirmed that the Brazilian forward suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and damage to the external meniscus in his right knee — an injury that will sideline him for the remainder of the season and rule him out of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The injury occurred during Real Madrid’s match against Getafe, just eleven minutes after Rodrygo entered the field. His knee became awkwardly planted during a play down the wing. Although he managed to finish the match, subsequent medical tests revealed significant structural damage to the joint.
The club’s medical report left no room for optimism. Real Madrid’s medical staff diagnosed a severe injury that typically requires surgical intervention for high-performance athletes.
The absence is a major blow for Real Madrid, who lose one of their key attacking figures during the decisive stretch of the campaign. The impact extends to Brazil’s national team as well, as Rodrygo will now miss the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
An ACL tear is considered one of the most serious injuries in professional football. Specialists generally recommend reconstructive arthroscopic surgery to restore knee stability and prevent long-term complications.
The standard recovery timeline ranges between 10 and 12 months. While some players may return to light training earlier, medical experts advise a full rehabilitation process to minimize the risk of re-injury.
Rodrygo’s recovery will follow multiple stages. The initial phase focuses on controlling inflammation and pain. The second stage centers on regaining mobility and rebuilding muscle strength, particularly in the quadriceps and hamstrings.
The final phase involves football-specific reconditioning, where the player gradually resumes high-intensity actions such as sprinting, stopping, cutting, and directional changes. Rodrygo now begins a long road of patience, discipline, and rehabilitation as he works toward returning to peak competitive form.
