Pumas UNAM ended a painful 12-year winless streak at the Estadio Universitario after defeating Tigres at El Volcán, a result that immediately became one of the most significant away victories in recent club history. Head coach Efraín Juárez praised his players after the final whistle, highlighting the effort, discipline and mentality shown against one of Liga MX’s toughest opponents.
The university side arrived in Monterrey facing both history and pressure, having failed to win at Tigres’ fortress for over a decade. Juárez admitted that he was not fully aware of the magnitude of the drought, but once informed, the result took on even greater meaning.
“I’m very happy for the group and for the team. It was a hard-fought match against a side with a lot of quality. We knew we would suffer in such a difficult stadium, but my players battled and competed until the end,” Juárez said after the match.
The Pumas manager explained that the coaching staff prepared a clear tactical plan to confront Tigres, making specific adjustments designed to neutralize their strengths and exploit counter-attacking opportunities.
“We knew it would be complicated because of the opponent and the stadium. We made changes that helped us in those circumstances and allowed us to be dangerous on the break,” the coach added.
Juárez also addressed the situation of striker Robert Morales, clarifying that the forward is still adapting after recently joining the squad and needs time to recover full match fitness following a long spell without regular playing time.
With this victory, Pumas not only gain three crucial points but also break one of their longest away droughts in Liga MX. The result boosts confidence within the squad and strengthens Efraín Juárez’s project as he continues to deliver important results away from home.
