Newcastle United are dealing with unexpected health concerns just days before their highly anticipated clash against FC Barcelona. Manager Eddie Howe confirmed that a virus has affected several members of the squad, creating uncertainty as the team prepares for a demanding schedule in both the Premier League and European competition.
One of the players impacted is German forward Nick Woltemade, who joined Newcastle as a replacement for Alexander Isak. Woltemade fell ill shortly after the match against Everton and has not trained with the squad since Saturday. Howe revealed that the medical staff is working to help the striker recover in time for upcoming matches, although his availability remains uncertain.
Midfielder Jacob Ramsey also experienced health issues over the weekend and reportedly vomited during the match. Despite the scare, Ramsey returned to training and could be available for Newcastle’s upcoming Premier League fixture.
Meanwhile, defender Tino Livramento continues progressing in his recovery from injury. However, the upcoming match against Manchester United may arrive too soon for the right-back. The club is instead targeting the European showdown against Barcelona as a more realistic return date.
Newcastle will also be without two key players for the tie against the Spanish giants. Midfielder Bruno Guimarães and defender Fabian Schär are both sidelined with injuries and are not expected to return until April after recovering from thigh and ankle issues respectively.
Young midfielder Lewis Miley is racing against time to regain fitness ahead of the second leg of the European series, although his participation remains uncertain according to the coaching staff.
Eddie Howe now faces the difficult task of managing a depleted squad while navigating a congested schedule that includes crucial Premier League matches and a high-stakes European battle.
With only a week remaining before Barcelona travel to St. James’ Park, Newcastle must overcome illness and injuries if they hope to compete at full strength against one of Europe’s most formidable clubs.
