Nathaniel Brown chooses Germany and leaves the USMNT without options

The German National Team called up for the first time Nathaniel Brown, left back of Eintracht Frankfurt. The 22-year-old player was also eligible for the United States, but upon entering an official qualification list for the he will be linked to the German team.

Brown was called up by coach Julian Nagelsmann for the matches on October 10 against Luxembourg and on the 13th against Northern Ireland. Germany needs to score points because it is in third place in its group after a defeat against Slovakia.

The defender was born in Germany, with a German mother and an American father. This dual nationality gave him the option of representing either of the two countries, although from a young age he participated in minor categories with the Mannschaft.

In the Bundesliga, Brown has established himself with Frankfurt. He was part of the under-21 team that reached the final of the European Championship in June, where Germany lost to England. His speed and ability to attack on the wing made him one of the most interesting prospects in his position.

The United States had closely followed his situation, even establishing contact to explore the possibility of adding him to the USMNT. However, with this call, the North American team practically loses any option of having him in the future.

The loss is sensitive because the left back has been a difficult position for the United States to reinforce. With Antonee Robinson as starter, the team was looking for greater depth thinking about the 2026 World Cup that it will organize together with Canada and Mexico.

For Germany, Brown arrives at a key moment. The team has losses in defense and Nagelsmann needs young alternatives who provide energy and offensive projection in important qualifying matches.

The decision also shows how elite teams secure players with dual nationality before they can opt for another country. Germany gets it just in time, while the United States will have to look at other options to remain competitive heading into their World Cup.
