Colombian midfielder José Caicedo could be living his final days as a player for Pumas UNAM. The footballer has received an offer from Major League Soccer, and his departure from the Mexican club appears increasingly likely.
The team interested in signing him is Portland Timbers, which has already submitted a formal proposal to acquire the player. Reports indicate that the personal agreement with Caicedo is already in place, and the contract would run for four years.
The potential transfer comes at a difficult moment for Caicedo within the squad. The Colombian midfielder has lost prominence during the 2026 Clausura season and has seen very limited playing time under head coach Efraín Juárez.
That lack of involvement has opened the door for a possible move away from the club. Caicedo has logged only about 40 minutes of action in the tournament, a surprisingly low figure for a player who previously played a much larger role in the team.
Since arriving at Pumas, the Colombian has played more than 100 matches for the university club. During that period, he scored three goals and provided several assists while operating mainly as a defensive midfielder.
However, his performances declined in recent tournaments. That drop in form led to criticism from supporters and created a noticeable disconnect with fans at Estadio Olímpico Universitario.
If the transfer is completed, Pumas would free up an international roster spot. That departure could allow the club to pursue a new signing in the transfer market as the season progresses.
