Minnesota United Emerges as the Next Destination for James Rodríguez

The Major League Soccer is shaping up to be the next chapter in James Rodríguez’s career as he approaches the final stage of his international journey. At 34 years old, the Colombian midfielder is very close to signing with Minnesota United, a move that would mark his debut in United States soccer.

After recent rumors linked him to a possible return to Liga MX or even Argentine football, all signs suggest the Colombian No. 10 has already made his decision. James is set to travel to the United States to finalize a short-term but strategic contract, aimed at staying competitive ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The news was first reported by Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra and later confirmed by Tom Bogert, a well-known MLS insider. According to the reports, the deal would be brief and focused more on sporting preparation than on a long-term project.

“Short-term contract. Probably the only real guarantee heading into the World Cup,” Bogert said regarding the negotiations between James Rodríguez and the MLS club.

One of the key factors pushing Minnesota United forward in the deal is that James would arrive as a free agent, after ending his contract with Club León, where a renewal agreement was never reached.

From within the Colombia national football team camp, the midfielder’s situation is being closely monitored. James has not played an official match since December 2025, and a move to MLS would allow him to join a team in full preseason and regain match fitness.

If the transfer is completed, Minnesota United would add a player with elite pedigree, including stints at Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, even though his most recent spell in Mexican football produced modest numbers.

During his time with León, James Rodríguez appeared in 34 official matches, scoring five goals and providing nine assists. Now, MLS appears to be the ideal stage for relaunching his international career and remaining a key figure in Colombia’s plans for the 2026 World Cup.
