Miguel Borja’s proposed move to Cruz Azul has stalled once again. The Colombian striker has left Mexico City and returned to his home country without signing the contract that was expected to make him La Máquina’s marquee signing for the Clausura 2026 season, despite having spent several weeks in Mexico.
Borja arrived in the capital in late December and everything pointed toward an official announcement in the first days of January. However, with the league already underway and Matchday 2 about to kick off, the agreement remains incomplete, setting off alarm bells at La Noria.
The timing could not be worse for Cruz Azul. The team opened the Clausura 2026 with a defeat against León and still lacks the attacking reinforcement that the coaching staff considers essential for the second half of the season.
For now, Borja will wait in Colombia while both sides attempt to resolve the issues blocking the deal. Reports suggest two main obstacles. Journalist Mauricio Gutiérrez claims there are financial disagreements, particularly over performance bonuses requested by the player. Meanwhile, Daniel Sandoval points to a roster problem: Cruz Azul already has nine non-Mexican-trained players and must free up a foreign-player slot before registering the Colombian forward.
Urgency is growing at La Noria. After Ángel Sepúlveda’s departure to Chivas, Gabriel Fernández remains the only natural striker on the squad. With Nicolás Larcamón still waiting for reinforcements, Cruz Azul will face Atlas this Wednesday at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc — their temporary home this semester — without the striker the board promised to strengthen the project.
