Mexico reveals first Liga MX call-ups ahead of 2026 World Cup

Updated: Apr 29

Mexico national football team officially announced its first group of domestic-based players called up for preparations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with head coach Javier Aguirre naming the Liga MX players who will begin training camp on May 6.

The selected players will report to the Centro de Alto Rendimiento after a one-week break, beginning an extended preparation camp before the tournament opens on June 11. Foreign-based players are expected to join later in the final squad process.

Among the most notable names included are goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo, defenders Israel Reyes and Jesús Gallardo, midfielder Luis Romo, winger Roberto Alvarado, and Toluca star Alexis Vega. Young talents such as Gilberto Mora and Armando González were also included.

One of the biggest talking points was the absence of injured Toluca midfielder Marcel Ruiz, who had been considered a strong candidate before his recent setback.

The announcement marks the beginning of Mexico’s final preparation phase as the host nation looks to build momentum before the World Cup on home soil. More names, especially Europe-based players, are expected in the coming weeks.
