Mexican-Brazilian Prospect Sets Record Release Clause in Brazil After Fluminense Renewal

Matheus Reis, an 18-year-old Mexican-Brazilian forward, has signed a contract extension with Fluminense through December 2030, cementing his status as one of the most coveted young talents in South American football. The new deal includes a release clause valued at around €80 million, placing him among the most expensive prospects in Brazilian football history.

The renewal follows a promising start to the season in which Reis made his first-team debut after recovering from injury. His performances have already put him on the radar of several European clubs scouting high-upside attacking talent.

Reis was born in Mexico City while his father, former professional footballer Elías Luiz do Reis, was playing for Pumas Morelos. That background grants him dual nationality and makes him eligible to represent either Mexico or Brazil at international level.

Although he has featured for Brazil’s youth national teams, Reis also played in a friendly match with Mexico’s U-18 national team, keeping the door open for a future decision in favor of El Tri.

The €80 million release clause significantly limits any potential move within the Americas, effectively positioning Europe as the most realistic destination should a major offer arrive. The figure underscores Fluminense’s confidence in his potential and their intention to protect a long-term asset.

At club level, Fluminense believes continuity will provide Reis with the stability needed to continue his physical and technical development in one of South America’s most competitive leagues, all while European interest continues to grow.

On the international stage, both Mexico and Brazil remain attentive to his future. Brazil has already integrated him successfully at youth levels, while Mexico hopes to convince him to complete a FIFA One-Time Switch, which would permanently tie him to the Mexican national team if he chooses that path.

With this long-term renewal, Matheus Reis secures time, structure, and protection to establish himself at Fluminense—while keeping his sights set on a potential European transfer and a pivotal decision regarding his international career in the years ahead.
