Liverpool FC described the death of Diogo Jota as an “immeasurable loss” in its annual financial report. The club included a heartfelt tribute to the Portuguese forward in its 2024–25 season accounts, a year that also saw Liverpool post record revenues of £700 million.
Jota tragically died last July alongside his brother, André Silva, following a car accident in northern Spain. The Portuguese striker passed away just 11 days after marrying his partner, Rute Cardoso, a tragedy that deeply shocked the global football community.
The financial report recorded an economic impact of £14.4 million due to the impairment of the remaining value of his registration and other associated costs. However, the club emphasized that this figure does not reflect the true human magnitude of the loss.
Liverpool stated that Jota left a lasting legacy both on and off the pitch and promised that the club will continue to honor his memory in the years to come.
The club also confirmed it will pay the remainder of the player’s contract to his wife and their three children, an amount estimated at around £14.5 million. Jota earned approximately £140,000 per week and was under contract with Liverpool until 2027.
Head coach Arne Slot praised the decision made by the club’s ownership and described it as an exemplary gesture within professional football.
Liverpool chairman Tom Werner remembered Jota as an extraordinary person and announced that the club will permanently retire the number 20 jersey in his honor.
Beyond the record-breaking financial figures, Liverpool made it clear that the human legacy of Diogo Jota goes far beyond any number in the balance sheet. ⚽
