Authorities in Mexico City are promoting a new initiative aimed at reducing fan violence ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The proposal encourages supporter groups and organized fan sections from Liga MX to sign a peace agreement before the global tournament begins.
The initiative was introduced by the Congress of Mexico City as part of broader preparations for the World Cup. The Mexican capital is scheduled to host 13 matches during the tournament, including the opening game, and officials expect millions of international visitors.
Given the global attention the event will bring, authorities are working to strengthen coexistence among fans and prevent conflicts inside and outside stadiums.
A special commission within the local congress responsible for monitoring World Cup preparations approved the plan to encourage dialogue between supporter groups from different Liga MX clubs. The goal is to build a culture of respect and ensure a safe environment at stadiums throughout the competition.
Pablo Trejo Pérez, a member of the commission, emphasized that the initiative is not intended to criminalize organized fan groups. Instead, the proposal focuses on shared responsibility and promoting peaceful fan culture in and around sporting venues.
The agreement would also involve cooperation between football authorities and public security agencies. The proposal includes collaboration with the Mexican Football Federation, the Secretariat of Government of Mexico City, and the Secretariat of Citizen Security of Mexico City.
Officials hope that all stakeholders within Mexican football will participate in the initiative. The broader objective is to demonstrate that football can serve as a space for community and celebration rather than conflict among supporters.
Some supporter groups have already begun organizing under a collective banner called “Barras Unidas de México.” These groups have been spreading a clear message among fans: rivals should face each other on the pitch — not in the streets.
