Lewandowski Equals Messi’s Historic Champions League Record

Updated: Jan 29

Robert Lewandowski once again etched his name among the great legends of European football. The Polish striker reached a historic milestone after scoring against FC Copenhagen, becoming just the second player in UEFA Champions League history to score against 40 different teams—a record previously held exclusively by Lionel Messi.

The goal came at the start of the second half and provided Barcelona with the equalizer. Lewandowski finished calmly in front of goal after a perfectly weighted assist from Lamine Yamal, reaffirming his continued impact at the highest level of European competition.

The goal against the Danish side carried special significance. It marked the first time Lewandowski had ever faced FC Copenhagen in his career, allowing him to add yet another club to his list of Champions League victims.

With this strike, Lewandowski reached 40 different teams scored against in the tournament, matching the record set by Lionel Messi during his time with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

Before reaching this milestone, Lewandowski had already surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo in this category. His goal in Prague had taken him to 39 different teams, and the strike against Copenhagen now places him level with Messi at the top.

Messi achieved his 40-team record across spells with Barcelona and PSG, while Lewandowski built his tally playing for Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and FC Barcelona—a testament to his longevity and consistency across elite clubs.

The goal was also Lewandowski’s second of the current Champions League campaign and marked his 15th consecutive season scoring in the competition, further cementing his historic status.

With 107 goals in 139 Champions League appearances, Lewandowski stands as the tournament’s third all-time top scorer, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. At 36 years old, and now partnering with rising star Lamine Yamal, the Polish striker continues to reach milestones reserved for football’s absolute legends.
