Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, has reignited the global debate over a possible return of Russia to international football, a topic that has divided the sports world since the country’s suspension in 2022.
Infantino stated that the ban imposed on Russian football has failed to deliver the intended outcomes, arguing that prolonged isolation has only created frustration and has not contributed to a meaningful solution within the sport.
The FIFA president emphasized that football should serve as a tool for unity and dialogue, rather than as a form of political punishment that directly impacts players and fans who are removed from international competition.
He also suggested that Russia’s potential return could follow a gradual path, beginning with youth and grassroots categories, before any discussion about reintegration into major international tournaments takes place.
Russia was suspended from all competitions organized by FIFA and UEFA in 2022 following the outbreak of the armed conflict with Ukraine. As a result, Russian teams were excluded from international tournaments and from the qualification process for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Since then, the sanction has been supported by multiple national federations. However, Infantino’s recent comments have reopened discussions about the real impact of the ban on global football and whether continued exclusion remains the best course of action.
For now, no official decision has been made regarding the lifting of the suspension. Still, the issue is clearly back on the table and could play a significant role in shaping the future direction of international football in the months ahead.
