“I Didn’t Expect It”: Brian Gutiérrez Reacts to Surprise Call-Up From Javier Aguirre

The Mexico national team wrapped up its friendly tour against Panama and Bolivia and returned to Mexico City with several stories that left a mark on the squad. One of them involved Brian Gutiérrez, the Chivas winger who admitted he did not expect to be called up by head coach Javier Aguirre for this FIFA window.

Upon arriving at Mexico City’s airport, the 22-year-old spoke publicly for the first time about what it meant to wear the national team jersey under Aguirre’s leadership. Gutiérrez acknowledged that the call-up came as a surprise, but he described the experience as an important step forward in his professional career.

The winger highlighted the treatment he received from the coaching staff during the camp. According to Gutiérrez, Aguirre consistently delivered messages of confidence and motivation, particularly to younger players who were experiencing their first national team call-up.

Gutiérrez made it clear that he is not looking too far ahead. He stressed that there are no guarantees when it comes to the 2026 World Cup and that his focus remains on working hard every day to earn future opportunities with the national team.

The call-up arrived during one of the best stretches of his career since joining Mexican football. Brian Gutiérrez has established himself as a regular presence in Chivas’ lineup under head coach Gabriel Milito, steadily gaining importance with each passing matchday.

His performances in Liga MX placed him firmly on the national team’s radar, and the friendlies against Panama and Bolivia served as an important stage to showcase his development.

After the international break, Gutiérrez returned to Guadalajara alongside fellow Chivas teammates Raúl “Tala” Rangel and Roberto “Piojo” Alvarado. All three have rejoined a squad that currently sits atop the Liga MX standings.

Chivas’ next challenge will be a Matchday 4 clash against Atlético de San Luis, where Brian Gutiérrez will look to carry the confidence gained with El Tri into league play and continue building his path forward.
