Guillermo Ochoa once again proved his value in European football after delivering a standout performance in AEL Limassol’s 1–0 away victory over Ethnikos Achnas in Matchday 16 of the Cyprus First Division. The Mexican goalkeeper was instrumental in keeping his net untouched and securing three vital points for his side.
AEL Limassol showed discipline, patience, and efficiency in a tightly contested match where every save mattered. Ochoa displayed calm and authority between the posts, establishing himself as one of the key figures of the game in a clash defined by intensity and physical duels.
After a balanced first half, AEL increased the tempo following the break and finally broke the deadlock in the 70th minute. Zakaria Sawo found space inside the box and converted the goal that ultimately decided the encounter.
Earlier in the second half, AEL had already come close when Breno scored, only for the effort to be ruled out after a VAR review. Despite the setback, the visitors maintained their attacking pressure and were rewarded for their persistence.
From a statistical standpoint, AEL Limassol enjoyed a slight edge in possession with 54% and were far more consistent going forward, registering 10 total shots, seven of them on target. Ethnikos Achnas attempted to respond, but they were repeatedly denied by a sharp and well-positioned Guillermo Ochoa.
The match was also shaped by refereeing decisions and a late red card that raised the tension in the closing minutes. Nevertheless, AEL managed the final stretch with composure and experience to close out the victory.
With this result, AEL Limassol now sit on 24 points after 16 rounds, climbing to seventh place in the Cyprus League and remaining within reach of the higher positions in the second half of the season. Ethnikos Achnas, meanwhile, remain near the bottom of the table with 14 points and will need a quick reaction to avoid falling further into danger, as Ochoa and AEL continue to build confidence and momentum.
