Girona Confirm Ter Stegen Surgery After Hamstring Injury, Season in Serious Doubt

The worst fears have been confirmed for Marc-André ter Stegen. The German goalkeeper will undergo surgery this Friday due to a left hamstring injury sustained during the match against Real Oviedo. The situation opens the door to a potentially premature end to his season.

Girona FC announced that the exact recovery timeline will only be determined after the operation. Even so, the general mood around the club and the player is pessimistic. The severity of the injury seriously compromises his availability for the coming months and also casts doubt over his participation in the next World Cup.

No definitive medical report will be issued until after surgery. However, concern is heightened by the goalkeeper’s recent injury history. Over the past year and a half, Ter Stegen has managed just 12 official appearances—10 with FC Barcelona and two with Girona.

Injuries have repeatedly disrupted his continuity. The lack of regular playing time makes any optimistic projection difficult. The medical staff is proceeding with caution, opting to assess his recovery step by step. At this stage, the outlook offers little encouragement.

The injury is a significant setback for both Girona and the player himself. Ter Stegen joined the club on loan from Barcelona during the winter window with a clear objective: to gain quality minutes and reestablish himself as a reliable option for the German national team.

The plan was to regain competitive rhythm ahead of the World Cup. This latest injury abruptly halts that process. Once again, the goalkeeper faces a long rehabilitation, with an evident sporting and emotional impact.

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann addressed the situation days earlier, describing the moment as particularly cruel for the player. He noted that Ter Stegen had returned in good form and with renewed motivation. Now, the sole priority is recovery.

From the player’s camp, there is a clear message: no rushed return. Avoiding setbacks and ensuring a full recovery take precedence. Ter Stegen’s immediate future remains uncertain, with both his season and World Cup prospects seriously in question.
