Former Real Madrid Star Criticizes José Mourinho’s Comments on Vinícius Jr. Amid Racism Controversy

The alleged racist insult directed at Vinícius Jr. by Prestianni continues to spark strong reactions across the football world, with new voices joining the debate after José Mourinho’s controversial comments following the match. The former Real Madrid manager questioned the Brazilian winger’s celebration, suggesting that he should not have “provoked a stadium of 60,000 people,” a statement that quickly drew criticism from players, coaches, and analysts.

Mourinho’s remarks contrasted sharply with the widespread support Vinícius Jr. received from several Premier League managers. Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola firmly defended the Real Madrid star, emphasizing that racism is not only a football issue but a broader societal problem that must be addressed collectively.

Liam Rosenior went even further, stating that anyone found guilty of racist behavior should have no place in professional football. Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised the football community’s response, arguing that the sport reacted appropriately in condemning the incident.

Former Real Madrid forward Emmanuel Adebayor, who played under Mourinho during his time at the club, also weighed in on the controversy. Although he acknowledged Mourinho’s history of strong relationships with African players, Adebayor insisted that coaches have a responsibility to protect footballers in situations involving discrimination.

“There is no place for racism in football,” Adebayor said, rejecting any narrative that could be interpreted as justification and calling for stronger action from governing bodies.

The former Arsenal, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur striker also urged UEFA and FIFA to reinforce anti-racism protocols to ensure clearer consequences and stronger protection for players facing abuse.

As investigations into the incident continue, the growing consensus among players, coaches, and former professionals sends a clear message: modern football must maintain zero tolerance toward racism, both on and off the pitch.
