Edson Álvarez Could Return to the Club That Launched His European Career

Edson Álvarez could be on the verge of one of the most eye-catching moves of the European winter transfer window. The Mexican midfielder is in talks over a possible return to Ajax Amsterdam, the club where he established himself and made the leap to elite European football before his move to the Premier League.

According to reports from Europe, Ajax’s board has already initiated contact to assess the feasibility of the deal, which would represent a symbolic “return home” for the Mexican international. Álvarez maintains a strong bond with the Dutch club and its supporters, built during some of the most successful years of his European career.

At present, Edson Álvarez is owned by West Ham United but is playing on loan at Fenerbahçe in Turkey. This situation adds complexity to any potential transfer, as negotiations would need to involve all three clubs. Any agreement would depend on aligning sporting and financial interests between West Ham, Fenerbahçe, and Ajax.

Ajax views Álvarez as an ideal option to strengthen its midfield, valuing not only his familiarity with the club but also his international experience, which the Dutch side considers essential to compete both domestically and in European competitions.

One factor complicating the operation is a muscle injury that has sidelined Álvarez since December. His physical condition could influence both the timing and structure of the deal. Additionally, Ajax must decide whether to pursue a permanent transfer or explore another loan arrangement, depending on financial conditions and West Ham’s stance as the owner of his rights.

If the move is completed, a return to Ajax would offer Edson Álvarez the chance to regain prominence and consistent playing time in an environment he knows well—one where he enjoyed some of the best moments of his career in European football.
