Donald Trump Sparks GOAT Debate by Saying Lionel Messi Could Be Better Than Pelé

Donald Trump reignited one of football’s most famous debates during a visit by Inter Miami CF to the White House. The U.S. president compared Lionel Messi to Brazilian legend Pelé, sparking immediate reactions among fans and attendees.

“You might be better than Pelé,” Trump said while addressing Messi in front of the audience, drawing laughter and surprise from those present. The president recalled watching the Brazilian icon play for the New York Cosmos in the 1970s but suggested that Messi’s achievements could place him even higher in football history.

The comment came as Trump officially welcomed Inter Miami following the club’s triumph in the MLS Cup 2025. During the ceremony, the president spoke about his admiration for the sport and also mentioned Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, the remark comparing Messi directly to Pelé quickly became the highlight of the event. The comparison reignited the long-running discussion about who deserves the title of the greatest footballer of all time.

Trump’s statement rapidly spread across social media platforms, where fans from different generations began debating once again the legacies of both icons.

Pelé famously won three FIFA World Cup titles with Brazil and defined an entire era of global football. Messi, meanwhile, secured the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina and holds numerous individual and team records from his career in Europe and South America.

Trump has previously hosted Cristiano Ronaldo at the White House and has publicly praised the Portuguese forward on several occasions.

With Messi’s visit, the U.S. president has now interacted with two of the most influential football figures of the modern era at different moments, creating another symbolic moment as the world moves closer to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
