Despite a Messi goal, Nashville SC Beats Inter Miami 2‑1 to Force Game 3 in MLS Cup Playoffs

Nashville SC claimed a significant 2‑1 victory over Inter Miami CF at GEODIS Park, forcing a decisive Game 3 in their best‑of‑three first‑round MLS Cup Playoff series. The win marked Nashville’s first in the series after Miami took Game 1 on the road.

The scoring opened early when Sam Surridge converted a penalty in the 9th minute after being fouled in the box, giving Nashville an early edge.   A second goal arrived just before halftime, as defender Josh Bauer headed home a set‑piece opportunity, extending Nashville’s lead to 2‑0. 

Despite a goal by Lionel Messi pulling one back for Miami late in the match, Nashville held on through smart defending and disciplined play.  Statistically, Nashville controlled key moments: they converted their chances while Miami, despite higher possession of the game and more accurate passes (83 % completion) , the team struggled to impose themselves in the midfield and attack the way we are used to seeing them play.

Miami’s coach Javier Mascherano admitted post‑match that the side “did not find good situations” and lacked depth in key zones, particularly in high‑intensity duels.   On the Nashville side, Surridge’s performance stood out — being named a candidate for the league MVP — and the team’s defense, including Bauer and veteran Andy Najar, matched their effectiveness on the other side of the ball. 

With the win, Nashville forces the series to a Game 3 at Miami’s home ground. The winner advances to the Eastern Conference Semifinals. For Nashville, the strength of home support and clinical finishing underline a path forward. For Miami, the loss raises questions about their ability to close out series stacks in high‑stakes matches.
