Club América has already begun planning for the Clausura 2026 season and is actively exploring ways to strengthen its attacking line after a disappointing elimination in the Apertura 2025 quarterfinals. Head coach André Jardine and the club’s sporting leadership have identified the striker position as a priority, following a tournament in which finishing and attacking depth proved inconsistent.
One of the names now generating strong interest in Coapa is Miguel Merentiel, the Uruguayan forward currently with Boca Juniors. The 29-year-old attacker is evaluating his future after the conclusion of the Argentine Clausura 2025, and his profile fits América’s need for a proven, high-intensity striker capable of leading the line in pressure situations.
Merentiel remains under contract with Boca Juniors and has a reported release clause of $18 million USD. Sources close to the player indicate that he has not formally requested a transfer, but his camp would be open to listening to offers if a proposal significantly improves his current financial terms. That context keeps the door open for a potential move abroad, including to Liga MX.
Club América is not alone in monitoring the situation. CF Monterrey (Rayados) is also tracking Merentiel’s status, particularly as they evaluate possible changes in their own attacking roster ahead of Clausura 2026. The growing competition for the striker could accelerate talks in the coming weeks.
According to reports in Argentina, Merentiel and his representatives have requested a meeting with Boca president Juan Román Riquelme before the end of the year. The goal of that discussion is to clarify his role within the squad and negotiate a possible salary adjustment ahead of the new season. If an agreement is not reached, Boca could be forced to consider offers from abroad.
For América, Merentiel represents a high-impact option capable of immediately raising the team’s offensive ceiling. His physical presence, pressing ability, and scoring record align with Jardine’s tactical demands and the club’s objective of returning to title contention in Clausura 2026. While no formal bid has been submitted, the Uruguayan forward remains firmly on América’s shortlist as the club prepares for a crucial transfer window.
