Chivas Confirms Chicharito’s Departure Ahead of the Clausura 2026 Season

Updated: Dec 12, 2025

Chivas have officially confirmed their first major roster change ahead of the Clausura 2026, announcing the departure of Javier “Chicharito” Hernández after an emotional and challenging second stint with the club. While the professional relationship has come to an end, the club emphasized that the bond between Hernández and the institution remains an enduring part of Chivas’ history.

Since returning in January 2024, Hernández appeared in 41 matches, scoring four goals and adding one assist. Persistent injuries limited his impact on the field, gradually turning early optimism into a constant battle to regain rhythm and fitness. His return was one of the most high-profile moments in Liga MX in recent years, with Chivas filling the stadium for his presentation. However, his competitive debut was delayed until February as he continued recovering from a serious ligament injury suffered during his time with LA Galaxy.

Chicharito’s second chapter with Guadalajara unfolded amid significant instability within the club. Over a two-year span, Chivas cycled through multiple head coaches, including Fernando Gago, Arturo Ortega, Óscar García Junyent, Gerardo Espinoza, and Gabriel Milito. That lack of continuity made it difficult for Hernández to settle into a consistent role, further complicating his efforts to rediscover peak form.

Following the announcement, Hernández addressed fans through social media, describing the experience as emotionally transformative. He explained that this stage of his career taught him humility, courage, and resilience, calling it one of the most demanding challenges he has ever faced. In a reflective reel shared online, Chicharito even compared his journey with Chivas to the film K-Pop Demon Hunters, acknowledging imperfection and embracing personal growth born from setbacks.

With Hernández’s departure confirmed, Chivas now open the door to an offensive rebuild as they plan for the Clausura 2026. For Chicharito, the focus shifts to defining the next step of his career. The nostalgia remains strong among supporters, but both player and club now look ahead, aware that this chapter closes with lessons learned rather than numbers alone.
