Charlotte FC Opens Playoff Series with 1‑0 Loss to New York City FC at Home

October 28, 2025.

Charlotte FC hosted New York City FC at Bank of America Stadium in Game 1 of the MLS Cup Playoffs Round One. The visitors claimed a 1‑0 victory, taking the early series lead and handing Charlotte a first home playoff loss of the season.

The decisive moment came in the 34th minute when Nicolas Alonso Martínez broke through the Crown’s defence, finished past goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina and fired New York City into a 1‑0 lead. It marked the club’s first-ever win against Charlotte on their home turf.

Statistically, New York City’s control was notable. They recorded 12 shots with five on target, registered an expected goals (xG) value of 1.47, and maintained 50% possession across the match. Charlotte produced 10 shots, four on target, but managed just 0.43 xG—highlighting their efficiency issues in crucial moments.

Charlotte entered the match with one of the league’s best home records, having been defeated only twice at home all season. Despite the record, without Wilfried Zaha due to suspension and Pep Biel out due to injury, Charlotte's attacking lacked fluidity. New York City arrived mostly healthy and executed a more compact defensive setup, which frustrated the Crown’s attackers.

Despite the loss, fans have been positive and note that this is still a successful season with over 33,000 of them in attendance. With gradual growth since the inaugural season Charlotte is starting to establish themselves as a top of the league team, having finished 5th last season, and 4th this season.

Looking ahead to Game 2 at Yankee Stadium, Charlotte will need to convert more chances and improve defensive efficiency. New York City, meanwhile, will aim to protect their lead and advance without returning to Charlotte for Game 3. Neither side can afford a slip‑up in this tight series. Stay tuned, as we will be bringing you all the coverage of game two on Football Club Magazine Instagram.
