Minnesota United officially announced Cameron Knowles as its new head coach, just one day after Eric Ramsay stepped down to take charge of West Bromwich Albion in England’s Championship.
The club chose to bet on internal continuity and on a profile that knows the organization inside and out. Knowles has been part of the coaching staff throughout recent cycles and had already taken on leadership responsibilities within the locker room.
At 43 years old, Knowles built a long career in Major League Soccer before making the full transition to coaching. As a player, he featured as a defender between 2005 and 2011, gaining experience across several MLS projects.
That deep understanding of the league and the current roster weighed heavily in Minnesota’s decision, as the club looks for stability following Ramsay’s departure. During his playing days, Knowles represented Real Salt Lake, Portland Timbers and CF Montréal, experiences that exposed him to different club models and competitive realities within MLS.
After retiring, he began his coaching path in Portland, where he worked as an assistant from 2012 to 2017 and later managed the club’s reserve team from 2018 to 2021. He then joined Minnesota United as a video analyst, before taking over as interim head coach in January 2024. Following that stint, he remained on the staff as an assistant under Ramsay, a proximity that ultimately smoothed his promotion to the top job.
With Cameron Knowles now at the helm, Minnesota United enters a new chapter led by a coach developed from within, aiming to preserve competitiveness and strengthen the club’s long-term project in Major League Soccer.
