Germán Berterame has officially closed his chapter with Monterrey and will continue his career at Inter Miami. The Argentine-born, Mexican-naturalized striker accepted the MLS club’s offer after a multimillion-dollar transfer agreement was reached ahead of the 2026 season.
Berterame had established himself as Monterrey’s top scorer and was firmly on the radar of the Mexican national team heading toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, the proposal from Inter Miami convinced both the player and the Rayados board. Club president José Antonio Noriega and the Monterrey leadership evaluated the offer from both a sporting and financial standpoint before deciding to move forward with the deal and approve the striker’s departure to Major League Soccer.
According to reports, Lionel Messi played a key role in the decision. The Argentine superstar reportedly spoke directly with Berterame and persuaded him to join Inter Miami’s ambitious project, a factor that ultimately tipped the scales in favor of the move.
Inter Miami agreed to a $15 million transfer fee, making Berterame one of the most expensive forwards to emerge from Liga MX in recent years. Monterrey, however, will not receive the full amount due to a previous agreement with Atlético de Madrid. Under the terms of that deal, Rayados will collect 65 percent of the transfer fee, while the remaining 35 percent will go to the Spanish club. As a result, Monterrey is set to receive approximately 174 million pesos, funds that will be deposited this Monday.
Berterame’s exit leaves a significant void in Monterrey’s attack, as the club parts ways with its main offensive reference. At the same time, the transfer provides Rayados with financial flexibility to pursue reinforcements and reshape the squad.
For Berterame, the move represents a leap into one of the most high-profile projects in MLS. At Inter Miami, he will share the locker room with global stars and aim to stay in top form as he pushes for a potential call-up to Mexico’s national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
