Barcelona Push for João Cancelo’s Return: Loan Offer Sent to Al Hilal Amid Inter Milan Competition

Updated: Jan 6

FC Barcelona have taken a decisive step in the winter transfer window by submitting a loan offer for Portuguese full-back João Cancelo, who is currently playing for Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Catalan club has already made its move with a proposal that would see Barça cover only part of the player’s salary.

The operation is driven by Cancelo’s own desire to return to Barcelona, where he enjoyed a highly productive spell and left a strong impression. While several European clubs are monitoring his situation, the Blaugrana view Cancelo as a priority signing to reinforce their defense for the second half of the season.

However, the deal is far from straightforward. Inter Milan have also submitted a loan offer and, according to Italian reports, have even reached a verbal agreement with the player. This competition complicates matters for Barcelona, who continue to operate under strict financial constraints in the transfer market.

Even so, sources close to the club believe Cancelo’s personal preference could tilt the balance in their favor. Barcelona urgently need solutions at full-back, a position that has been one of the most fragile areas of the squad throughout the current campaign.

During the 2023-24 season, João Cancelo enjoyed a standout loan spell with Barcelona after arriving from Manchester City. He played 42 matches across LaLiga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey, establishing himself as a key piece thanks to his attacking output and tactical intelligence.

The Portuguese defender contributed four goals and five assists, including a memorable strike against Napoli in the Champions League Round of 16, a moment that proved decisive in Barcelona’s progress through the tie.

Now, the possibility of Cancelo’s return hinges on negotiations with Al Hilal, who still hold his contract. While Inter Milan are pushing with a stronger financial package, Barcelona are banking on the emotional bond between player and club, as Cancelo has never hidden his affinity for the Blaugrana project or his desire to play again at Camp Nou.
