Barcelona Hit With Major Blow: De Jong Out vs Atlético Madrid

ree

FC Barcelona suffered a late setback ahead of their crucial Matchday 19 clash against Atlético Madrid. Frenkie de Jong has been ruled out due to a fever and will not travel to the Metropolitano, leaving Hansi Flick without one of his most important midfield leaders.

De Jong also missed the previous match — a victory over Alavés that allowed Barcelona to take the top spot in LaLiga. His last appearance was the defeat to Chelsea, meaning he will now accumulate two consecutive absences as he focuses on recovery and a full return to match fitness. The Dutch star adds to the growing injury list. Barcelona will also be without Fermín López, Gavi, Ronald Araújo, and Marc-André ter Stegen — all unavailable for Flick.

This increases the pressure on young sensation Lamine Yamal and star striker Robert Lewandowski, who spearhead the squad for one of the season’s most demanding fixtures. Flick will be forced to adjust his tactical plan without De Jong’s control and distribution in midfield, relying instead on depth and adaptability from the remaining core.

Barcelona will attempt to defend their league lead while their midfield anchor works on regaining full health. The challenge is significant — but the message from within the club remains confident: even with heavy absences, the Blaugrana must perform at the highest level in one of the most decisive matches of the season.
