FC Barcelona have officially confirmed the return of João Cancelo. The Catalan club reached an agreement with Al-Hilal for the Portuguese full-back to join on loan until the end of the season. Cancelo will wear the number 2 shirt in his second spell as a Barça player.
The contract signing took place on Tuesday at the club’s offices and was attended by president Joan Laporta, vice-president Rafael Yuste, board member Joan Soler and sporting director Deco, along with members of the player’s family. During his presentation, Cancelo showed a strong emotional connection to the club, revealing that he waited for Barcelona from the moment the opportunity arose and describing the chance to wear the blaugrana shirt again as a true honour.
The Portuguese defender returns with ambition and made his objectives clear. Cancelo wants to compete at the highest level, enjoy his football and fight for titles — goals he could not fully achieve in his first stint. He also highlighted his excitement about playing once again at the Spotify Camp Nou, a stadium he considers unique.
João Cancelo previously represented Barcelona during the 2023/24 season on loan from Manchester City. In that campaign he played 42 official matches across LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League, contributing both goals and assists from the right flank. After that spell, he joined Al-Hilal, where he made 45 appearances over a season and a half before completing his return to the Blaugrana.
Throughout his career, Cancelo has built an elite résumé. He developed at Benfica, winning several domestic titles, later excelling at Valencia before stints with Inter Milan and Juventus. He then established himself at Manchester City and also enjoyed loan spells at Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
With this move, FC Barcelona add experience, versatility and leadership to their squad for the decisive stretch of the season, while Cancelo fulfills his desire to once again wear the famous blaugrana colours.
