A familiar face returns to Liga MX to take over Mazatlán FC

Just three matchdays into the Clausura 2026, coaching changes have already begun to shake up Liga MX. In a turbulent start to the tournament, Mazatlán FC decided to make a move on the sidelines and turn to experience in order to steady the ship for the remainder of the season.

The Sinaloa-based club officially confirmed Sergio Bueno as its new head coach for the rest of the Clausura 2026. The manager from Colima returns to Mexico’s top flight after several years away, marking his official comeback to Liga MX following his last stint at the highest level.

Mazatlán FC announced the decision through an official statement, highlighting Bueno’s extensive experience, leadership, and professionalism. Club executives believe his profile fits the team’s current needs, as Mazatlán is going through a difficult sporting moment and is searching for stability in a tournament that could prove decisive for its future.

As part of the announcement, the club also confirmed that René Isidoro García will join the staff as assistant coach, while Alberto Pedraza will take over as head of physical preparation. Both will be part of the technical staff supporting Sergio Bueno in this new challenge with the Cañoneros.

Mazatlán FC also used the statement to thank Christian Ramírez, who managed the team during the first three matchdays of the Clausura 2026. The club clarified that Ramírez will return to his role as Director of Youth Development, acknowledging his commitment and willingness to step in during the early part of the tournament.

For Sergio Bueno, this appointment represents his first Liga MX project since his time with Atlante in 2018, when he coached in what was then the second tier of Mexican football. Since then, he had remained away from the top-flight spotlight until this new opportunity arose.

With more than two decades of experience, Sergio Bueno has managed several clubs across Mexican football, including Atlas, Cruz Azul, Santos Laguna, León, Puebla, Querétaro, Necaxa, San Luis, and Morelia. Throughout his career, he has built a reputation for taking on complex projects and navigating high-pressure situations.

The immediate goal for Mazatlán FC will be to stabilize performances and finish the Clausura 2026 with improved results, relying on the experience of a coach who knows the Liga MX environment inside and out.
