Updated: Mar 16

Marcel Ruiz suffered a knee injury during the CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 match between Deportivo Toluca Fútbol Club and San Diego FC, raising concern both for the club and the Mexican national team.

The midfielder and Toluca captain left the field around the 40th minute of the first half after a collision with an opposing player while contesting the ball. Following the contact, Ruiz remained on the ground with clear signs of discomfort in his right knee before being replaced by Nicolás Castro.

According to Toluca’s initial medical report, the player will undergo further examinations to determine the severity of the injury, as the club seeks to rule out a more serious problem. Early assessments suggested the issue could be the result of a strong impact, although doctors planned additional tests to confirm the diagnosis.

In an official message, Toluca expressed its support for the midfielder, emphasizing that the club’s medical staff will continue evaluating his condition and wishing him a speedy recovery. The injury could also affect the plans of the Mexican national team ahead of upcoming international matches.

The situation has generated concern given Ruiz’s importance for Toluca and his growing role with the national team, especially with major international competitions approaching in the coming months.
