Russell takes pole in dramatic Australian GP qualifying

Australian Grand Prix qualifying delivered early drama in the opening round of the 2026 Formula One season at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, where George Russell secured pole position after a dominant performance for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.

Russell set the fastest lap of 1:18.518, beating teammate Kimi Antonelli by nearly three-tenths of a second to complete a Mercedes front-row lockout, signaling a strong start for the team under the new 2026 regulations.

Behind the Mercedes pair, Isack Hadjar qualified third, followed by Charles Leclerc in fourth and Oscar Piastri in fifth. Reigning champion Lando Norris placed sixth, while Lewis Hamilton will start from seventh on the grid.

The session also featured major incidents. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen crashed during the first qualifying segment after a rear-axle lockup at Turn 1, preventing him from setting a lap time and leaving him at the back of the grid for Sunday’s race.

With Mercedes showing early dominance and several contenders facing setbacks, the stage is set for an unpredictable season-opening race at Albert Park.
