Australian Grand Prix opened the 2026 Formula One season at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, marking the beginning of a new era for the championship with major technical regulation changes and the introduction of new teams on the grid.
Starting from pole position, George Russell delivered a strong performance for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, leading the race after the team locked out the front row in qualifying. The British driver controlled the pace at the front, while teammate Kimi Antonelli helped underline Mercedes’ competitive start to the season.
Behind them, several contenders battled for podium positions on the tight and demanding Albert Park circuit. Drivers including Charles Leclerc, Oscar Piastri and reigning champion Lando Norris were among those fighting for points in the opening race of the year.
The weekend also highlighted the impact of Formula 1’s new regulations, which introduced lighter cars, updated aerodynamics and a new power-unit configuration splitting energy evenly between combustion and electric power. These changes, along with the arrival of new teams such as Cadillac and Audi, signal the beginning of a transformative season for the sport.
With the first race completed in Melbourne, the championship battle begins to take shape as teams evaluate their competitiveness and prepare for the next round of the 2026 calendar.
