Mexico Drops in FIFA Rankings After Being Overtaken by African National Teams

The Mexico national football team began 2026 with a setback in the latest FIFA World Rankings, slipping one position following the most recent international update. The change came after several global results, including a key victory by Senegal national football team, which triggered adjustments across the standings.

As a result, Mexico dropped from 15th to 16th place—a modest numerical decline that nonetheless draws attention given the broader context. El Tri is deep into preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The ranking dip serves as a warning sign for the team led by Javier Aguirre, who is focused on building a competitive, well-defined core ahead of the tournament.

While the fall in the rankings is largely explained by the progress of other national teams rather than a single poor result, Mexico’s recent performances remain under scrutiny. Consistency and growth are now central themes as the countdown to the World Cup continues.

Looking ahead, Mexico is scheduled to play several international friendlies in the coming months. These matches will be crucial—not only for improving its FIFA ranking, but also for refining tactical cohesion, evaluating player options, and restoring confidence before the World Cup kicks off.

Beyond the number beside its name in the rankings, the real challenge for the Mexican national team will be turning preparation into results on the pitch, especially against higher-level opponents, in what shapes up to be a decisive year for Mexican football.
