Lionel Messi has once again addressed the controversy involving Mexican boxing star Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, clarifying that the situation was misunderstood and insisting he never intended to disrespect Mexico or its national team.
Speaking on the Miro de Atrás podcast, the Argentina captain explained that the viral incident following the Argentina vs. Mexico match was taken out of context. A locker-room video circulated on social media appeared to show Messi kicking a Mexico jersey, sparking backlash online and prompting a strong reaction from Canelo Álvarez at the time.
Messi emphasized that the moment was misinterpreted and that he has never had any issues with Mexican fans or players. “Honestly, it had nothing to do with disrespect,” Messi said during the interview, aiming to clarify the controversy that became one of the most talked-about moments of the 2022 World Cup.
The Argentine star explained that the jersey was simply on the locker-room floor after the match, something he described as common in post-game environments. “It was just a shirt on the ground, like always happens in a dressing room. I never wanted to disrespect anyone,” he added.
Matches between Mexico and Argentina have historically carried tension during World Cups and major international tournaments. However, Argentina has traditionally dominated the head-to-head record, fueling ongoing debate about whether the rivalry is truly sporting or largely driven by media narratives and World Cup history.
The Messi-Canelo controversy quickly became a viral global story during Qatar 2022, though the intensity of the debate has faded over time. With his latest comments, Messi appears determined to close the chapter completely and reaffirm that he holds no conflict with Mexican supporters.
As anticipation builds toward the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, Messi’s clarification seeks to put an end to one of the most controversial off-field stories of the previous tournament.
